AUSTIN, Texas — Love-A-Bull, a nonprofit organization promoting responsible ownership of pit bulls through education and advocacy, has just launched an all-pit bull therapy dog program called “The Pit Crew.”  Composed entirely of pit bulls, The Pit Crew is the first program of its kind in the country.  The dogs and their owners plan to visit children and adults in need, including those living with mental and physical challenges.  Studies have shown that dogs provide therapeutic interaction that can improve mood, build confidence, and repair hearts.  Pit bulls, as natural “people-pleasers,” are an excellent fit for this type of activity.  In fact, several of the dogs seized from Michael Vick now work as therapy dogs.

Mocha, a nine-year old pit bull rescued from a shelter in New York seven years ago by owners Lydia Zaidman and David Coulter, has been a certified therapy dog in Austin for two years.  She has provided comfort and companionship to soldiers at Fort Hood suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and she has served as a “Barking Buddy,” patiently listening to stories being read by elementary school students who need to build reading confidence and skills.  Her calm demeanor and warm eyes immediately ease these types of interactions and provide a stress-free relationship.  She joins six other pit bulls in The Pit Crew’s first set of therapy-trained graduates that have attained their Canine Good Citizen staus from the American Kennel Club and are undergoing an eight-week training program at Gullett Elementary School in north central Austin.

Zaidman says, “The Pit Crew is a way to offer a unique community service and also rehabilitate the reputation of pit bulls at the same time.  We hope that by showing the true nature of these loving dogs in a therapeutic setting, we can change minds for the better.”

Love-A-Bull is partnered with Julie Eskoff, Certified Pet Dog Trainer – Knowledge Assessed (CPDT – KA), a professional member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers and an AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Evaluator, who has extensive knowledge working with all kinds of dogs.  Eskoff spent 12 weeks volunteering her services while observing the pet therapy training program for Divine Canines and the Austin State Hospital’s Pet Pardners in-house therapy dog program.  She also participated in the Delta therapy dog complex dog training program.  Her two pit bulls, Moby and Pearl, work as therapy dogs.

Teddy’s a Chill Guy

Teddy

Hi there, I’m Teddy and I’m looking for my forever home. I’m 4 years old and in excellent health. I’m a pretty chill guy – my favorite activities are going for walks (long or short), curling up next to my foster mom on the couch and sleeping. I also love belly rubs and ear rubs and pretty much any rub you can think of. I am fully house trained and can hold it all day while my foster mom is at work. I am not destructive at all and can be free to roam the joint without getting into trouble.

TeddyI grew up in a home with another dog, but I am dominant so I would do best as an only dog or with a mellow female. I grew up in a home with kids, too, but I would prefer not to have a bunch of active little ones climbing all over me.

I walk beautifully on a flexi leash or a leash with a front harness. I have excellent recall and will return to you as soon as you call my name. My foster mom says that I clearly want to please the human in my life. I don’t need a ton of space to run around and will be just as happy in an apartment as in a house.
Teddy Have I mentioned how handsome I am? Well, it’s true, and I’m not the only one who thinks so – everyone who meets me thinks I’m a looker. I weigh a trim 48 lbs and everyone thinks I’m a mixed breed, possibly lab with a little bit of pit.

I don’t bark a lot (my foster mom lives in an apartment and there have been no issues with me being loud), but I will let you know if I see something outside that seems significant, such as another dog.

Please consider meeting me… you will love me, I just know it!!

General: I’m Here

It’s me, General. Foster mom’s camera broke so she hasn’t taken any new pictures of me. But foster dad got her a new one for her “birf-day!” She takes a picture and then says the word “crap” or “shoot” or some other words that aren’t too nice. She said she has to “get the hang” of the new fancy camera. Until then, I just keep sleeping and eating.

Speaking of eating, don’t tell foster mom, but Little Kid gave me some cinn-a-min toast this morning! It sure was good and softee like. And sweet! I like sweet.

Mint Julep: My life at Mud Puppies, or The MP as I like to call it!!

Mint Julep

Mint Julep at Mud Puppies

So I just had dinner and boy was that yummy! Way better than the food they were giving me at the Shelter. So I wanted to share a little more about my favorite things, you know, to entice you to want to make me a part of your family.

Do you like to go jogging?? Well, I could always go for a daily run. As you can see from the pictures above I love to play chase with my friends! Honey, Ki, and I are total girlfriends. If we had long hair (and hands) we would totally braid each others hair. So for now a good old game of chase will do.

Well, I’m pretty tired from my day at Playcare and all of my friends are going home for the day! So I think I’m going to hit the sack. Even though I don’t have a forever home just yet, my family at Mud Puppies is really showing me lots of love! Who knew a girl like me could be so lucky. Goodnight, sleep tight, and don’t let the bed bugs……. Wait…… What the… Who came up with that saying, I don’t want to get bitten. Anyways goodnight!!

Kendall and Kelsey

Kendall and Kelsey

Maggie Martin wants to share a positive story with Love-A-Bull readers. Maggie’s boyfriend, Kendall, previously served in the Marines and was stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. He returned to Austin last spring and began suffering from symptoms such as poor memory and irritability. He was soon diagnosed as suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Maggie and Kendall lived together until late last year, when Maggie moved to Alabama for a new job. They were concerned that Kendall’s PTSD symptoms would worsen after Maggie moved away, but they realized that their pit bull, Kelsey, helped lessen Kendall’s PTSD symptoms. Kelsey stayed with Kendall after Maggie moved.

Kendall feels calm around Kelsey and finds that she helps him focus on her rather than on feelings of anger or paranoia. Kelsey seems to sense Kendall’s need for her and stays close by, whether he’s cooking or doing homework. Kelsey also sleeps with Kendall, which helps lessen his nightmares. Kelsey allows Kendall to feel the sense of protection that he needs to help counter his PTSD symptoms.

The couple wants Kendall to feel comfortable wherever he goes so Kelsey has become a certified service dog. Kendall can now go anywhere with the comfort of his trusty service pittie, Kelsey!

If you think your dog has the temperament to serve the community and help those in need, like Kendall, check out The Pit Crew and consider training your dog for therapy work.

Mint Julep: Who loves to play?? ME!!!!!

Today has been a great day! My foster family at Mud Puppies took this video of me playing! I’m the one with the red collar, the other blue lacy I’m playing with is my friend Casper. We get to play almost everyday at Mud Puppies, but I wish I could go home like most of the other dogs do at Playcare! I know that my forever family is right around the corner, so if you’re looking for me you know where to find me! Playing with Casper and all my other pup friends!!

Mourning the Loss of Tyson

Tyson and Layla, Unchained

Tyson on the day we unchained and rescued him.

Love-A-bull is mourning the loss of a very special member of our family, Tyson. We were informed last night that Tyson was hit by a car and killed. We are not sure of the exact date.

This is a note from when we first rescued Tyson:

This powerhouse is ready to take on his new life!! A happy strong boy with lots of energy! He and Layla were chained feet apart from each other in a back lot since they were pups. Excited to start his new life Tyson would do great with someone who can give him some structure and maybe some nice walks/jogs. He is so, so sweet and suffered through having his body grow around the harness, and his ears cut with a scissor. He is heartworm positive, which we will pay for but this doesn’t stop him from loving everyone he meets!

Tyson, you will forever be in our hearts and our memories. Rest in peace, little man.

I ONLY WANTED YOU

They say memories are golden
well maybe that is true.
I never wanted memories,
I only wanted you.

A million times I needed you,
a million times I cried.
If love alone could have saved you
you never would have died.

In life I loved you dearly,
In death I love you still.
In my heart you hold a place
no one could ever fill.

If tears could build a stairway
and heartache make a lane,
I’d walk the path to heaven
and bring you back again.

Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same.
But as God calls us one by one,
the chain will link again.

General: Sit!

So, if you remember, Foster Mom makes me sit before I get my food. I know it’s hard to believe, so I asked her to take a picture of me doing it. At my age, it’s hard to get back up again. She should know this.
