PBAD | Artist to offer pet portraits during flagship event

Stephanie Conrad is a self-taught artist who has combined her love of animals and artistic talent to help Austin-area animal rescue organizations. Love-A-Bull leaders have named Conrad’s The Pet Studio as the exclusive provider of pet portraits for the organization’s third annual National Pit Bull Awareness Day.

In November,  when a client mentions Love-A-Bull, Conrad promises to donate 25 percent of commissions to the group that founded the nation’s first all-pit bull therapy dog group, The Pit Crew.

Love-A-Bull is inviting all pit bull lovers to join the effort to set a new record for the world’s largest gathering of pit bull type dogs during PBAD on Sunday Nov. 6 in downtown Austin.

A pit bull parade will start at 11:30 a.m. in front of the Austin American Statesman building at Barton Springs and Congress. The parade will lead to a festival 1 – 5 p.m. at Republic Square Park, 422 Guadalupe St. Both events are free and open to the public.

Q&A with Stephanie Conrad:

Tell me about the animals in your life.
I currently share my home with 4 pets. Holly Madison, my pit mix , who absolutely adores my cats, Jazz and Izze Belle. Cody O is a Shih Tzu, Dachshund, Scotty mix.

How did you get involved with animal rescue?
Rescue has been a huge part of my life for so long, it just seems natural to have different rescue organizations on my radar, like Love-A-Bull. I started as a rescue volunteer in Houston 10 years ago when I was 16. I have since been really involved in rescue, both with fostering, as well as education, and I am a huge no-kill advocate.

Describe what it means to be able to paint pet portraits.
It’s incredible! Not many people get to live their dream, especially at 26 years old. I started this business with a painting I did for a friend after his lab passed away. So many people loved it, that I was asked to do more and more. Now only a year and a half later, I have over 10,000 fans on facebook and am able to do something that I truly love for a living. It’s been such a fast-paced year but I am so honored when someon orders a painting from me. I have done more than 200 individual paintings, and I am still so overjoyed when someone orders a piece. It feels unreal sometimes.

What was the best part about PBAD last year?
My favorite memory from the actual day was seeing the parade approaching the park. It was so calm and quiet, and then suddenly this wall of people and pit bulls flooded Republic Square Park.

In general, it was such a lighthearted and happy day. It was wonderful to see so many other pit bull lovers socializing and showing support for these amazing dogs.

What will you be doing different for PBAD this year?
Since last year, we have started a second business doing T-shirt design. We are bringing that business with us to this year’s PBAD, as well as The Pet Studio’s portraits. I will be donating a couple of custom portraits for the silent auction.

AOL’s Paw Nation offers Pit Crew coverage

Coverage of Love-A-Bull’s Pit Crew can be seen on a leading pet-related website today. AOL’s Paw Nation published The Pit Crew With Love-A-Bull – Changing People’s Perceptions One ‘Pittie’ at a Time this afternoon.

The article provides a brief history of Love-A-Bull’s founding as well as an overview of the work Pit Crew volunteers do at Gullett, Perez and Blackshear elementary schools and Heart House, a free after school program for children from low-income families.

Pit Crew dogs have comforted soldiers coping with symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and helped children relax and gain confidence while trying to read.

“The Pit Crew is very effective in teaching our kids about pit-bull stereotypes, as well as how to interact with animals in a loving way,” elaborates Amy Fuller, volunteer director with the afterschool program at Heart House Austin. “Our kids struggle with bullying on a daily basis, so it is really meaningful for them to know that bullying is never acceptable, whether it’s with their peers or with pit bulls” as Fuller aptly summarizes the meaningful role the Pit Crew has in their community.

PawNation bills itself as a resource about animals “from the funny and amazing things they do to how their owners can best care for them.”

The article’s author, Shelley Bueche, is an Austinite who writes about working dogs and contributes to two canine magainzes. Read her blog on Red Room.

Editor’s notes | Several errors appear in the article:

  • After involvement with a previous therapy dog organization, Zaidman learned pit bulls were the second most common dogs used for therapy work with that organization.
  • The Pit Crew is the first all-pit bull therapy group in the nation.
  • Julie Eskoff is Pit Crew’s trainer.
  • Lydia Zaidman, Meghan Turner, and Leala Ward co-founded Love-A-Bull.

Best Friends makes progress in pit bull effort

Best Friends Animal Society, the website for the nation’s largest no-kill animal sanctuary featured in the former National Geographic TV series Dogtown, announced June 27 its efforts to help pit-bull type dogs are gaining traction.

Shelter Partners for Pit Bulls aims to decrease shelter euthanasia rates for pit-bull-terrier-type dogs, increase the number of pit-bull-terrier-type adoptions and positive outcomes, and redeem the image of pit-bull-terrier-type dogs in local communities.

The group started with five pilot communities: Cucamonga, Calif.; Baltimore; Washington, D.C.; Tampa, Fla.; and San Diego, Calif. PetSmart Charities granted the effort $240,000 along with additional support from Best Friends.

The result has been an increase in adoptions and happier dogs.

To further these efforts, Chrissie’s Fund recently provided a $20,000 donation to the two California Shelter Partners for Pit Bulls. Later this year, each shelter will receive $2,000 to buy enrichment toys for the shelter’s pit bull-type dogs and $8,000 to fund their upcoming Neighborhood Pit Bull Days.

Love-A-Bull is in the process of organizing its own celebration for National Pit Bull Awareness Day.

Join the festivities 11:30 a.m. Nov. 6 at the south end of Congress Avenue Bridge, 305 S. Congress Ave., Austin.

He is best known for his work and public appearances with Georgia, a sweet, 7-year old toothless female pit bull who, despite being a victim of cruelty and abuse, responds with love to all she meets.
