When Hazel first appeared in our volunteer Emily’s yard, she wasn’t just looking for a friend—she was looking for help. She had been living most of her life outdoors, slipping through the fence on occasion and seeking out company from Emily’s dog, Phoebe.
Then, one day, Hazel was gone.
Months passed before Emily saw her again. But this time, she wasn’t alone—Hazel had given birth to 11 puppies. Hungry for attention, they started sneaking into Emily’s yard just like Hazel had before.
No one meant for this to happen. Emily’s neighbor, a woman living alone, was overwhelmed when the family members that cared for Hazel moved away. She was doing her best, but she didn’t have the resources to handle an unexpected litter.
That’s where Love-A-Bull stepped in.
The neighbor agreed to let us help, and thanks to our community, we jumped into action. By the time we stepped in, some of Hazel’s puppies had already found homes, but our team arranged vet visits, vaccinations, and spay/neuter appointments for Hazel and the 6 remaining puppies. When the recent cold front hit Austin, we even provided shelter supplies to keep them safe.
At first, Emily’s neighbor wasn’t sure if she could keep Hazel and the puppies. She worried about caring for them properly. But as we worked together, she proved how much she cared. She asked for help. She stayed in contact. She made changes to give them a better life.
Today, Hazel is spayed, fully vaccinated, and living indoors. The neighbor is keeping Hazel and one of her puppies, Chip, because they are family.
This is what Love-A-Bull does. We don’t just rescue dogs—we empower and educate individuals to be the best pet parents they can be.
